Water damage restoration technician

What the job involves

• Attend flooded homes and buildings, often outside business hours
• Extract standing water and set air movers and dehumidifiers to a written drying plan
• Take and log moisture readings every day a job is running
• Photograph and document damage for the customer and their insurer
• Remove saturated materials once a hazardous materials survey clears the area
• Keep equipment clean, calibrated and accounted for

What you need

• A BC class 5 driver licence and a clean abstract
• The physical capacity to lift equipment and work in confined and wet spaces
• Willingness to take a share of the on-call rotation
• The ability to pass a respirator fit test, repeated annually
• Comfort explaining what is happening to someone having a bad day

The hard parts

Read this list before you apply. These parts of the job can be difficult.

• Call-outs happen outside regular hours. The busiest weeks can fall during cold snaps and atmospheric rivers.
• Sewage work is part of the job. It is unpleasant and requires full protective equipment.
• Some work is repetitive. You may move equipment, take readings, record them and return the next day to repeat the process.
• Customers may be under stress, and some will direct their frustration at you.
